Pune, May 28, 2025 â€“ In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance last-mile connectivity to Pune’s Lohegaon Airport, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has unveiled plans for new transit corridors. The proposed extensions include a 3 km spur from Ramwadi to Lohegaon Airport and a 20 km corridor from Civil Court to Yewalewadi, with an additional spur to NIBM, serving fast-growing areas like Kondhwa and Undri.

On May 23, Maha-Metro invited consultancy firms to prepare an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these routes. Atul Gadgil, Director (Works), Maha-Metro, confirmed that the Pune Metro Line 3, currently under construction by Tata-Siemens, will also be extended from Civil Court to Kondhwa, Yewalewadi, and Undri. A decision on whether Maha-Metro or Tata-Siemens will execute this extension will follow the DPR’s completion.

The AAR will evaluate transit options, including metro rail and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), assessing cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, passenger demand, and integration with Pune’s existing transport network. The DPR will outline technical specifications, financial needs, and implementation timelines.

A senior Maha-Metro official emphasized that these corridors will address Pune’s growing connectivity needs while promoting sustainable urban transport. Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol recently directed Maha-Metro and PMC to expedite the DPR.

This expansion is expected to cut travel time, reduce carbon emissions, and boost public transport usage, marking a significant step in Pune’s urban mobility development.
