LPG Shortage in Pune: Collector Issues 96-Hour Delivery Deadline; SPPU Messes Turn to Firewood

Pune LPG shortage

PUNE – Amid a deepening fuel crisis that has forced premier educational institutions to cook with firewood, the Pune District Administration has stepped in with a strict 96-hour delivery mandate to curb a growing panic over domestic LPG shortages.

The 96-Hour Rule: Collector Mandates Doorstep-Only Delivery

With residents reporting week-long delays for refills, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has issued a directive to all oil marketing companies and gas agencies. Effective immediately, all domestic LPG cylinders must be delivered to the consumer’s doorstep within 96 hours of booking.

To prevent hoarding and “panic booking,” the administration has also enforced a mandatory lock-in period:

  • Urban Pune: 25-day gap between refills.
  • Rural Pune: 45-day gap between refills.

“There is no actual shortage of stock, but the surge in bookings due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia has strained the supply chain,” Collector Dudi stated. To streamline the process, the “walk-in” system, where customers collect cylinders directly from godowns, has been strictly banned. All deliveries must now be authenticated via a one-time password (OTP) at the consumer’s home.

SPPU Crisis: Students Face Food Scarcity During Exams

The most visible impact of the LPG shortage in Pune 2026 is at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Despite orders to prioritize educational institutes, several hostel messes have run out of gas.

At the girls’ hostel and at least one boys’ hostel, staff have resorted to using traditional firewood stoves to prepare meals for over 5,000 students currently appearing for examinations. “We are serving limited menus like khichdi and masala rice because making rotis on firewood is nearly impossible for such a large number,” said a mess representative. The Student Federation of India (SFI) has staged protests, demanding that the Pune University hostel LPG crisis be resolved immediately to avoid academic disruption.

Industrial Impact: Chakan and Bhosari Units Face Production Cuts

The crisis has extended beyond the kitchen to Pune’s “Auto Hub.” Nearly 30% of MSMEs in the Chakan and Bhosari industrial belts, particularly those involved in forging and plating, have been forced to cut production.

As commercial LPG price in Pune remains volatile and supply inconsistent, smaller units that cannot afford to switch to expensive electricity or diesel are facing temporary shutdowns. Industry experts warn that a prolonged shortage could hit the global automobile supply chain originating from the city.

Current Situation: When Will Supply Normalize?

The gas shortage Pune news today remains a mix of administrative hope and logistical reality. While the 96-hour deadline aims to ease consumer anxiety, distributors argue the backlog, which has reached over 6,000 pending bookings at some agencies, will take time to clear.

Current estimates from the District Food Distribution Office suggest that while supply from alternative routes (including imports from the US and Argentina) is increasing, the situation in Pune may only fully stabilize in May 2026. Residents are urged to avoid booking refills unless their current cylinder is near exhaustion to allow the system to prioritize those in critical need.
