Pune: Lamp Topples on Ganpati Decoration Causing Major Fire in Flat, Elderly Woman Rescued
A quick-thinking response from neighbors and firefighters prevented a potential tragedy in a Pune high-rise on Tuesday night after a simple decorative item sparked a fire.
Pune, September 03, 2025: The incident occurred around 9:18 PM in a tenth-floor apartment on Canal Road’s Sundar Sanskruti Society. According to officials, a decorative lamp accidentally fell onto the home’s Ganesh festival decorations, instantly igniting the flammable materials in the hall.
The immediate concern was for the well-being of the flat’s lone resident, 70-year-old Kumud Barsawale, who was inside at the time. Thankfully, before the city’s fire brigade could even arrive on the scene, local residents sprang into action. They managed to safely rescue the elderly woman from the apartment, and she was brought out completely unharmed.
Not stopping there, the building’s residents also used the on-site firefighting system to aggressively combat the flames, preventing the fire from spreading and causing major damage. When the fire brigade team arrived just before 10:00 PM, they took over, conducting a final “cooling operation” to ensure every spark was out and the area was safe.
Officials confirmed that thanks to this combined effort, there were no casualties and the property loss was minimal. The event serves as a stark reminder, especially during festival seasons when homes are filled with decorations, to be extra vigilant about potential fire hazards like lamps and electrical fittings near flammable materials.
