Pune: Increase in Hapus Mango Supply Post-Gudi Padwa Leads to Price Drop; Rates Fall by ₹300-₹600 per Dozen
Market Yard, 2nd April 2025: Following the Gudi Padwa festival, the arrival of Hapus (Alphonso) mangoes at Pune’s Market Yard has surged significantly. The daily supply, which was between 1,000 to 2,000 crates last week, has now risen to 4,000 to 5,000 crates. However, due to reduced post-festival demand, mango prices have started declining.
Compared to last week, Hapus mango prices have dropped by ₹300 to ₹600 per dozen, depending on quality. In retail markets, a dozen mangoes are now selling for ₹700 to ₹1,200, down from ₹1,000 to ₹1,800 last week.
This year, erratic weather conditions in the Konkan region have led to an estimated 40% drop in mango production compared to normal levels. Initial lower flowering resulted in limited early-season arrivals. While Gudi Padwa traditionally marks peak mango supply, this year’s arrivals increased only after the festival.
Though cloudy weather persists across Maharashtra, traders say it currently poses no immediate threat to the crop. However, potential storms or heavy rains could cause fruit drop, further reducing supply. Market experts state that mango availability in the coming weeks will largely depend on weather conditions.
