Pune: Historic Merger Approved – Khadki and Pune Cantonment Boards to Integrate with PMC

Pune News, July 11, 2025: In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra government has granted in-principle approval for the merger of the Khadki and Pune Cantonment Boards with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The move, aimed at streamlining governance and accelerating development in these areas, was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Vidhan Bhavan.
Key Decision-Makers and Attendees
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, senior cabinet ministers, MLAs Siddharth Shirole, Saroj Ahire, Sangram Jagatap, and Sunil Kambale, and top government officials. Notable figures included Revenue Minister Chandrakant Bawankule, Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, Other Backward Classes Welfare Minister Atul Save, and Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal. Senior bureaucrats such as Principal Secretary of Urban Development K.H. Govindaraj and Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Ashwini Bhide were also present.
Why the Merger Matters
For years, residents of cantonment areas have demanded better civic amenities, including improved water supply, sanitation, roads, waste management, and healthcare. The merger will now bring these regions under PMC’s jurisdiction, ensuring faster decision-making and uniform urban development.
CM Fadnavis emphasized that this integration will enhance infrastructure planning and service delivery, with the state government providing necessary support through the District Planning Committee. He directed authorities to complete the merger process within three months.
Wider Impact Across Maharashtra
Besides Pune and Khadki, other cantonment boards in Maharashtra will also be merged with respective municipal bodies:
- Aurangabad Cantonment → Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation
- Deolali & Ahmednagar Cantonments → Independent Municipal Councils
- Kamathi Cantonment → Yerkheda Nagar Panchayat
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar urged the newly merged municipal bodies to submit development proposals to the District Planning Committee for swift execution.
