Pune News, June 15, 2025: Torrential rainfall wreaked havoc across Pimpri-Chinchwad and adjoining areas on Friday, leading to severe waterlogging, multiple incidents of tree collapse, and vehicles being swept away in gushing streams, officials confirmed.

According to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), six cases of tree falls were reported in Bhosari, Talawade, Chikhali, and Charholi, disrupting traffic and damaging property. In Charholi Gaon near DY Patil Road, five four-wheelers and three two-wheelers were carried away by overflowing waters.

“Residents rescued five to six people trapped in vehicles. Police barricaded the affected road by 11 PM, and the stretch remains closed,” said Rushikant Chipade, Chief Fire Officer, PCMC.

Poor Urban Planning Worsens Flooding

Civic experts blamed unplanned construction, encroachments, and choked drainage systems for exacerbating the flooding. Shrikant Gabale, a civic planner, highlighted, “Many streams are now narrowed or covered due to unchecked construction. Stormwater drains must be regularly mapped, and waste dumping must be strictly prohibited.”

Omprakash Bhaiwal, Head of PCMC’s Disaster Management Cell, stated that industrial waste like thermocol and plastic clogged drains despite pre-monsoon cleaning. “14 flood-prone areas, including Wakad, Bhosari, and Ravet, have been identified. Our teams will monitor these zones during heavy rains,” he added.

Emergency Measures & Public Advisory

The PCMC has urged residents, especially in low-lying areas, to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours. Citizens can contact the Disaster Management Helpline or Fire Brigade at 9922501475 for emergencies.
