Pune: Hadapsar Railway Station Transformed into Satellite Terminal to Ease Congestion at Pune Junction

In a major move to decongest Pune Junction, the Pune railway division is redeveloping Hadapsar Railway Station into a fully operational satellite terminal for long-distance trains. The ₹135 crore project, part of the Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aims to shift several express and long-distance trains to Hadapsar, reducing pressure on the city’s central railway hub.
Key Infrastructure Upgrades
The transformation includes:
- Platform Extensions: Up and Down platforms extended to 600 metres to accommodate 24-coach trains.
- New Lines: Conversion of existing goods lines into passenger tracks and addition of a new freight corridor.
- Modern Amenities: New station building, waiting halls, digital displays, lifts, escalators, and a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge.
- Parking & Drainage: Enhanced parking zones, improved water supply, and drainage systems.
Several upgrades, including platform extensions and passenger facilities worth ₹11.69 crore, are already complete. Officials aim to provide an “airport-like experience” with features such as roof plazas and retiring rooms.
Connectivity Challenges Remain
Despite infrastructure improvements, last-mile connectivity remains an issue. Commuters from areas like Magarpatta and Amanora report poor PMPML bus services, auto-rickshaw refusals, and traffic congestion near the station. Sneha Kulkarni, a daily commuter, highlighted the difficulties faced by elderly passengers and those with luggage due to inadequate transport links.
Authorities Working on Solutions
Railway officials are collaborating with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and PMPML to improve public transport access. Once fully operational by early 2026, Hadapsar is expected to serve as a crucial hub for eastern Pune, reducing travel time for residents and easing congestion at Pune Junction.
This redevelopment aligns with Pune’s broader urban mobility strategy, emphasizing decentralized, sustainable, and passenger-friendly rail infrastructure.
