Pune: First Alphonso Consignment Arrives at Market Yard; Karnataka Mango Fetches ₹5,100 Per Box
Pune, December 18, 2025: In a surprising shift from tradition, the first consignment of the season’s Hapus (Alphonso) mangoes has arrived at Pune’s Gultekdi Market Yard from Karnataka. While the Konkan region typically marks the debut of the king of fruits in the city, this year’s early arrival has come from the neighboring state, nearly 20 to 25 days ahead of the usual schedule.
The first lot, comprising six boxes, arrived at the stall of prominent trader Rohan Satish Ursal. The mangoes were harvested from the farm of G.M. Shafiulla, a farmer based in Karnataka. During the auction, a single box containing four dozen mangoes fetched a premium price of ₹5,100, reflecting high demand despite the early season.
The consignment was purchased by traders Suresh Kevalani and Bony Rohra. The auction took place in the presence of veteran trader Satish Ursal and Yuvraj Kachi, former vice-president of the Adte Association, among other market stakeholders.
Early Season Trends
The arrival of Hapus follows closely on the heels of Lalbagh mangoes, which reached the market just two days prior on Sunday. Market experts note that this year’s prices are approximately 30% higher than the previous year.
Traders attributed last year’s sluggish start to severe crop damage caused by unpredictable weather in Karnataka. However, the outlook for 2026 (the upcoming peak season) remains optimistic. “The quality of this initial batch is excellent,” traders noted.
While supply is expected to remain sporadic through February, the peak mango season, which traditionally commences in April, is projected to start as early as March this year due to favorable harvesting conditions.
