Pune, June 12, 2025 – As the much-awaited double-decker flyover on Ganeshkhind Road nears completion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct a grade separator at Pune University junction to further streamline traffic flow on this busy stretch.

The proposed 7.5-metre-wide, 440-metre-long grade separator will include a 210-metre covered portion and an open stretch of 150 metres, with 80 metres on either side. Once operational, it will allow vehicles from Shivajinagar to Aundh to bypass the Pune University junction entirely, reducing congestion.

Additionally, a 152-metre connecting arm will link Senapati Bapat Road to the double-deck bridge at University Chowk, ensuring smoother transitions for commuters. The approaches for the flyover will be constructed using reinforced earth walls for durability.

Traffic Diversions & Current Challenges

Currently, the Pune University junction faces severe traffic disruptions due to the ongoing Metro and double-decker flyover projects. PMC Chief Engineer Yuvraj Deshmukh stated that the grade separator work will commence only after the flyover opens, allowing traffic to be diverted efficiently.

“The PMC is finalizing administrative processes, and construction will begin in the coming months,” Deshmukh said. Meanwhile, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), responsible for the flyover, is expected to complete the remaining work shortly.

Project Background & Delays

The 1.7 km double-decker flyover replaces two older flyovers demolished in 2020 to accommodate an integrated Metro rail system from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. Initially slated for completion in 2024, delays have pushed the opening to this year.

The flyover features:

  • two-lane ramp for traffic from Aundh/Baner to Shivajinagar
  • three-lane flyover from Shivajinagar to Baner/Pashan
  • At-grade road connectivity for Aundh, Baner, and Pashan to Senapati Bapat Road

PMC Executive Engineer Shrikant Gaikwad confirmed that the grade separator construction will follow the flyover’s inauguration to minimize public inconvenience.
