Pune residents may soon enjoy direct flights to European destinations, as the central government has initiated the process of extending the runway at Pune Airport. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced the move, which aims to overcome infrastructural limitations that currently restrict international connectivity.

Currently, Pune Airport lacks direct flights to Europe due to its short runway, which cannot accommodate wide-bodied aircraft used for long-haul routes. However, Mohol confirmed that the expansion process has begun, with nearly 300 acres of land being acquired for the project. The cost will be shared by multiple government bodies—60% by the Maharashtra government, 20% by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 10% by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and the remaining 10% by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Mohol stated, “Within the next one-and-a-half years, Punekars will be able to travel directly from Pune to international destinations, including European cities.”

Purandar Airport Progress & Pune’s Aviation Boost

The announcement aligns with broader efforts to enhance air connectivity in the region. Mohol also emphasized the significance of the delayed Purandar Airport project, confirming that land acquisition is now underway. The new airport, set to meet international standards, is expected to significantly improve connectivity for Pune and western Maharashtra.

“Pune will soon have an international airport at Purandar, a matter of pride for the city and the region,” Mohol added.

Terminal Upgrades & Flyer Reactions

Meanwhile, Pune Airport’s new terminal is now fully operational, with the old terminal undergoing redevelopment. Flyers expressed excitement, calling the development a “dream come true.”

“Currently, traveling to Europe means flying via Mumbai or Delhi, adding cost and inconvenience. Direct flights from Pune will transform business and leisure travel,” one said.

Currently, Pune Airport serves 35 domestic and three international destinations (Dubai, Bangkok, and Singapore). The proposed upgrades could soon add major European cities to that list.
