Pune: Chandni Chowk to Bhugaon Traffic to be Streamlined; New Bypass to be Constructed Within 9 Months

Pune residents and daily commuters have a reason to cheer, as a major traffic-easing project has officially been given the go-ahead. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has approved the much-anticipated Bhugaon Bypass project.
This new bypass is designed to tackle the notorious traffic bottlenecks on the Pune-Kolad National Highway, specifically the congested stretch between Chandni Chowk and Bhugaon. For years, this area has been a major headache for drivers, especially those heading towards the scenic areas of Mulshi.
The new road will be a significant piece of infrastructure: an 860-meter long, four-lane bypass that is 18 meters wide. The best news? The government has set an ambitious target to complete the entire project within just nine months.
A key reason for this confidence is that 95% of the necessary land has already been acquired. The landowners were compensated using FSI and TDR, which helped move the process along smoothly. With the land ready and the contractor appointed, the main hurdles are cleared.
Once finished, the bypass will do more than just decongest the immediate area. It will seamlessly integrate with Pune’s developing Ring Road, creating a smoother and more efficient network for the entire region. This will be a huge boost for connectivity, significantly improving the commute for people traveling from Chandni Chowk towards Mulshi, and benefiting the residents of Bhugaon, Bhukum, and Pirangut.
With a project cost of ₹15.3 crore, this bypass promises to be a transformative development, saving time, reducing stress, and improving the daily drive for thousands.
