Pune, July 23, 2025 – The water in Pune’s Bhatghar Dam has taken on a concerning green hue over the past few days, alarming local residents. The discoloration, particularly noticeable in the mornings and lasting until noon, has raised questions about water safety, as the dam supplies drinking water to several villages, including Bhor city.

Green Coloration Spreads Across Northern Banks & Nearby Villages

The unusual green tint has been observed along the dam’s northern banks and in surrounding areas such as Sangamner, Malwadi, and Narhe villages. Locals suspect that private fish farming activities in the dam may be contributing to the issue. According to residents, fish are being fed nitrogen-rich food, potentially triggering excessive algae growth, which turns the water green.

Administration Takes Swift Action, Samples Sent for Testing

Authorities have taken immediate notice of the situation, collecting water samples for laboratory analysis. Vikash Kharat, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Bhor, addressed public concerns, stating, “Excess nitrogen in water promotes algae overgrowth, leading to the green coloration. While this is not hazardous to humans or wildlife, we are investigating the cause.”

Kharat further explained that fishermen conducting pisciculture near the dam have been sprinkling nitrogen-rich fish feed into the water, likely accelerating algae proliferation. He assured residents that the water remains safe for consumption and no health issues have been reported so far. Test results are expected within two days.

Khadakwasla Cluster’s Role & Bhatghar Dam’s Significance

The Khadakwasla cluster—comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar dams—is Pune’s primary water source. While Bhatghar Dam specifically supplies water to Bhor city, its condition is being closely monitored to prevent any potential disruptions.

Precautionary Measures & Public Advisory

Until lab results confirm the water’s safety, the administration has advised locals to remain vigilant. Officials are also working on measures to remove algae and prevent further contamination.

The situation remains under close observation, with updates to follow once test findings are released.
