Pune Becomes India’s First City to Launch Google-Powered ‘Trafficure’ for Real-Time Traffic Management

PUNE – In a landmark technological leap for urban mobility, Pune has officially become the first city in India to implement a comprehensive online traffic management system, ‘Trafficure’, developed in direct collaboration with Google India.

The initiative, which leverages high-fidelity data from Google Maps, marks a transition from traditional manual monitoring to a proactive, data-driven ecosystem designed to slash congestion across the city’s increasingly crowded arteries.

The Science Behind ‘Trafficure’: 550 Zones and Real-Time Alerts

The Trafficure Pune system is built on a granular digital map of the city. Under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, the Pune City Traffic Police segmented the metropolitan area into 550 distinct zones based on road networks and historical vehicular flow.

By integrating Google Maps Pune traffic management tools, the software monitors vehicle density and speed in real-time. Unlike previous systems that required manual reporting of jams, Trafficure features an independent alert system. As soon as a bottleneck begins to form, the platform pushes instant notifications to field officers, allowing for “preventative” traffic control before a minor slowdown turns into a gridlock.

Measurable Success: Vehicle Speeds Jump by 34%

The implementation of the Pune real-time traffic system is already yielding significant data-backed results. Following a rigorous 45-day pilot phase across January and February 2026, authorities reported a remarkable improvement in the city’s mobility.

“Over the last two months of using the application, we have observed that the average vehicular speed has increased to 26.8 kmph from 20 kmph,” stated Additional CP Manoj Patil.

This 6.8 kmph increase represents a significant reduction in travel time for daily commuters. The data has also allowed the police to identify and prioritize “chronic” Pune traffic congestion hotspots, including:

  • Hadapsar and Kalepadal
  • Navale Bridge
  • Katraj-Kondhwa Road

A Partnership for Smarter Infrastructure

The launch of Trafficure is the result of a Pune Traffic Police Google collaboration that stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Maharashtra state government and Google India last year. Technical implementation was supported by Lepton Software, ensuring the Google-backed data translates into actionable insights for local law enforcement.

The system doesn’t just track speed; it records the specific causes of disruptions, ranging from accidents and waterlogging to unauthorized diversions, enabling the Pune Police to perform scientific “root-cause” analysis of the city’s traffic woes.

Future Outlook: AI-Based Traffic Management

Speaking at the launch, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar emphasized that Trafficure is only the first phase of a broader digital transformation.

“This is a technological intervention aimed at identifying traffic hotspots and providing relief to citizens,” Kumar said. He further revealed that the department is preparing to integrate a fully AI-based traffic management system soon, which will automate signal timings based on live density data, further streamlining the commute for Punekars.
