Pune News, June 15, 2025: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has issued a stern warning to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Metro officials over unresolved debris and worsening traffic congestion due to ongoing metro construction. Pawar threatened a hefty penalty of ₹10 crore if the debris is not cleared before the arrival of the Palkhi procession.

Growing Public Inconvenience

Pawar, who was in Pune for a traffic review meeting, criticized the slow progress of metro work, particularly in areas like Hinjawadi, where stalled construction has severely disrupted traffic flow. He emphasized that the rubble and blockages must be removed immediately to ease public movement.

“If the debris caused by the Metro project is not cleared promptly, PMRDA will issue a ₹10 crore penalty notice to Metro authorities. Metro officials have sought an extension of two to three days, but this delay cannot continue,” Pawar stated.

Rainfall and Waterlogging Worsen Traffic Woes

Pune has been experiencing relentless rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas. The incomplete metro works, coupled with debris-clogged roads, have exacerbated traffic congestion across the city.

Preparations for Ashadhi Wari Pilgrimage

Pawar also reviewed arrangements for the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage, where thousands of devotees carrying Palkhis (holy processions) of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj traverse through Pune. He stressed the need for clear roads to avoid inconvenience to the devotees.

“Warkaris take whichever roads are accessible. It is crucial that no debris or mud remains on these routes,” he said. Additionally, he ordered the removal of flex banners and hoardings along the Palkhi path for a smooth procession.

Safety Measures Amid Heavy Rains

Following flood-like situations at Dive Ghat, Pawar directed officials to implement stringent safety measures along the Wari route. He instructed the administration to install proper barricades and ensure emergency preparedness, given the heavy rainfall.

The review meeting was attended by key officials, including Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Pune Municipal Commissioner Nawal Kishore Ram, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and District Collector Jitendra Dudi.

Pawar also urged the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to remain on high alert and ensure uninterrupted power supply along the pilgrimage route. He emphasized the need for clean drinking water, sanitation, and medical facilities for the devotees.

COVID-19 Vigilance Continues

While the COVID-19 situation in Pune remains under control, Pawar advised continued vigilance, especially during large gatherings like the Wari. “There’s no need to panic, but precautions must be observed,” he said.
