Pune News, June 16, 2025: In a stringent crackdown following a fatal accident, Pune police have registered 18 FIRs against drivers and owners of heavy vehicles within just 48 hours for violating no-entry zone restrictions. The enforcement drive comes after a tragic incident on June 11 at Gangadham Chowk in the Market Yard area, where a truck hit a scooter, killing Dipali Yuvraj Soni on the spot and injuring Jagdish Soni (61).

Legal Action Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)

The police have invoked Sections 281 (negligent conduct concerning machinery/vehicles in public places) and 223 (causing death by negligence) of the BNS against the offenders. Authorities stressed that such violations not only endanger lives but also worsen traffic chaos in densely populated areas.

Police Statement & Zero-Tolerance Policy

Manoj Patil, Additional CP (Eastern Region), stated, “Despite the ban, heavy vehicles continued entering restricted zones. Drivers and owners were disregarding the law, prompting this crackdown, which will continue.”

Amol Zende, DCP (Traffic), emphasized that FIRs act as a stronger deterrent than routine fines. “Holding violators criminally accountable ensures stricter compliance, pressures transport companies to follow rules, and improves public safety by preventing future accidents.”

Gangadham Chowk Declared a Red Zone

Following the fatal accident, Gangadham Chowk has now been marked as a red zone, with heightened surveillance and stricter penalties for violations.

The police have intensified checks at key junctions to enforce the ban on heavy vehicles during restricted hours, aiming to reduce accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow.
