Pune News, June 28, 2025: In response to the increasing passenger demand and the approval of new metro routes, the Pune Metro is set to expand its fleet with 15 new trains and 45 additional coaches. This move by MahaMetro aims to enhance commuter comfort and decongest the metro system, ensuring smoother and more efficient travel for Punekars.

Key Highlights of the Expansion:

  • Current Fleet: 34 trains (102 coaches)
  • New Additions: 15 trains (45 coaches)
  • Future Fleet: 49 trains (147 coaches)
  • Daily Ridership: Currently 1.7 lakh, projected to reach 3.5 lakh

Why the Expansion?

With Pune Metro’s ridership growing steadily, overcrowding—especially during peak hours—has become a major concern. The recent approval of two new metro routes has further necessitated the expansion. Each new train will consist of three coaches, significantly increasing capacity and reducing congestion.

Official Statements:

  • Hemant Sonawane, Senior Manager, MahaMetro:
“We are continuously working to improve metro services. The addition of 15 new trains will ensure Punekars enjoy a comfortable and hassle-free commute.”
  • Commuter Feedback:
“This is great news! Peak-hour crowding is a daily struggle. More trains will make travel faster and more pleasant.” – Kunal Chavan, a regular metro user.

Future Plans:

The new trains will be deployed once the upcoming metro routes are operational, strengthening Pune’s public transport network.
