Power Chaos in Hinjawadi Pune: 52,000 Consumers Left in the Dark After MahaTransco Line Failure

Massive Outage Hits Hinjawadi, IT Parks; Supply Restored in Phases After 14-Hour Crisis
Pune News, July 07, 2025: A major power breakdown disrupted life for over 52,000 consumers in Pune’s Hinjawadi, Pimpri, and Mulshi regions after a critical 220 KV underground line failed on Sunday afternoon. The Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MahaTransco) reported a technical fault in its Infosys-Pegasus extra high voltage line near Hinjawadi Phase-2 Metro Station, triggering widespread outages in residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
What Caused the Blackout?
The crisis began around 2:10 PM on Sunday, shortly after MahaTransco completed scheduled maintenance on the high-voltage line. While power was briefly restored post-maintenance, a sudden fault plunged large parts of Hinjawadi and surrounding areas into darkness. The failure affected 25 feeder lines, cutting electricity to 91 high-tension (HT) and 52,000 low-tension (LT) consumers, including major IT parks and residential societies.
Emergency Restoration Efforts
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) immediately launched emergency measures, rerouting power through alternate lines to minimize disruption. By 10 PM Sunday, supply was restored to 2,000 consumers, and by 4 AM Monday, all 52,000 LT consumers had electricity back. However, 85 HT and 2 extra high-tension consumers, including tech giants like Infosys and Nextra, remained without power due to infrastructure limitations.
“Our teams worked overnight to restore supply. Low-voltage consumers have been prioritized, but high-load industrial users will take more time,” said Sunil Kakade, Chief Engineer of MSEDCL.
Worst-Hit Areas
The outage severely impacted:
- Mulshi Division: Xrbia Society, Kolte Patil Township, Marunji, Maan, Jambe, Nere, Dattawadi
- Pimpri Division: Hinjawadi MIDC, IT Park, Wipro Circle, Raisoni Park, Dohler Company
Residents and IT Sector Bear the Brunt
With Hinjawadi being a major IT hub, the blackout forced several companies to advise employees to work from home (WFH) for the next two days. One employee shared, “We got a traffic and power disruption advisory due to ongoing underground cabling work near Wipro Circle. Road closures are expected, so WFH is recommended.”

Questions Over Maintenance & Coordination
While MSEDCL managed to avert a prolonged crisis, concerns linger over MahaTransco’s maintenance protocols and coordination between transmission and distribution agencies. Officials confirmed that the root cause was a failure in MahaTransco’s 220 KV line, raising calls for better infrastructure resilience in high-growth zones like Hinjawadi.
What’s Next?
MSEDCL is working to restore power to remaining HT consumers, but full recovery may take additional time due to load capacity constraints. Meanwhile, residents and businesses hope for smoother operations in the coming days.
