PMC urges citizens to boil water before consumption: Know more about the advisory and details

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an advisory urging citizens to purify drinking water by using alum (तुरटी), filtering, and boiling it before consumption. This comes as monsoon rains have led to increased turbidity (गढूळपणा) in water sources, raising health concerns.
Why Is Water Turbidity Higher During Monsoon?
Due to the ongoing monsoon season, the first rains have washed significant amounts of mud and sediment into water reservoirs. As a result, the water in dams is much cloudier than usual, making standard purification processes less effective.
Areas Where Water Is Supplied Without Full Treatment
In newly included villages such as:
- Nanded
- Nandoshi
- Kirkitwadi
- Khadakwasla
- Sansanagar
- Dhayari
- Nanhe
The PMC supplies water only after disinfection, without full purification. Hence, residents in these areas are especially advised to use alum, filter, and boil water before drinking.
Even Treated Water May Have Some Turbidity
While most parts of Pune receive water treated at purification plants, there are instances where the turbidity exceeds the plant’s capacity. In such cases, slightly murky water may still reach households. The PMC emphasizes that even treated water should be purified at home using alum and boiling.
PMC’s Recommendations for Safe Drinking Water
- Use Alum (तुरटी): Helps settle suspended impurities.
- Filter the Water: Removes remaining particles.
- Boil Before Drinking: Kills harmful microorganisms.
