The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a strict ultimatum to housing societies and residents resisting the installation of Automated Meter Reading (AMR) water meters: comply or face disconnection.

Under the city’s Uniform Water Supply Scheme, the PMC is rolling out a network of smart meters to monitor usage, detect leaks, and ensure fair distribution. However, growing opposition from some residents has forced the civic body to take a tough stance.

No More Warnings – Act Now or Lose Water

A senior PMC official confirmed, “If people continue to oppose meter installation, we will cut their water supply without notice. Unchecked leaks and wastage cannot go on.”

Despite ample water reserves in Pune’s dams, many areas still suffer from low pressure and irregular supply. The PMC has already installed 1.8 lakh AMR meters, helping identify leaks and excessive usage. “Where meters are in place, wastage has reduced significantly,” the official added.

Free Installation, But Owners Must Protect Meters

The PMC is covering the cost of initial meter installation, but residents must choose suitable locations on their properties. Once installed, any damage or tampering will be the owner’s responsibility.

Why Smart Meters Are Essential

Currently, the PMC lacks precise data on water consumption, making it difficult to resolve complaints. AMR meters will:
✔ Detect leaks in real time
✔ Measure actual usage vs. supply
✔ Improve complaint resolution
✔ Ensure fair distribution

“Without meters, we’re flying blind,” the official said. “We can’t fix problems we can’t measure.”

Final Call for Cooperation

The PMC has begun sending formal notices, urging residents to comply. “This isn’t a threat—it’s a necessity for Pune’s water security. Refusing meters hurts everyone,” the notice states.
