Mumbai: In a landmark development for India’s entertainment sector, Prime Focus on Friday announced a massive ₹3,000 crore investment to establish a state-of-the-art 200-acre film city in Mumbai. The announcement, made during the ongoing WAVES 2025 event, was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government.

The ambitious project, envisioned as a next-generation entertainment and production ecosystem, is poised to generate up to 2,500 jobs and attract global filmmakers, tech innovators, and tourists. It will feature high-tech production studios, live entertainment venues, interactive experience centers, and lifestyle amenities such as restaurants, hotels, shopping zones, and residential spaces—essentially a self-sufficient entertainment city in India’s financial and film capital.

Founded in 1997 by Namit Malhotra, Prime Focus is the parent company of several industry-leading firms including the Oscar-winning visual effects powerhouse DNEG, artificial intelligence firm BRAHMA, and Prime Focus Studios, which manages content production and financing. The company already owns one of Asia’s largest studio campuses in Mumbai.

Malhotra emphasized the cultural and strategic significance of the venture:

“We are not just developing the world’s foremost content creation centre; we are creating a destination that presents India’s culture, our history, and our capabilities to the world,” he said, highlighting the project’s alignment with India’s cinematic legacy and global ambitions.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the move, calling it a crucial component of the state’s infrastructure strategy.

“As we continue to lead with projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, the coastal road, and the Vadhvan Port, I am glad to add this next-gen entertainment hub to the list of transformative initiatives. It will further secure Mumbai’s position as a global centre for filmmaking and media.”

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of infrastructure and sustainable growth in bolstering Maharashtra’s leadership in development. He noted that this new entertainment hub will integrate seamlessly with other mega-projects, creating long-term economic and cultural value for the state.

Key Features of the Upcoming Film City:

  • High-tech studios with cutting-edge digital infrastructure
  • Live entertainment venues, theme parks, and immersive experience zones
  • Retail, dining, and residential spaces for an integrated live-work-play environment
  • Aimed at boosting tourism, job creation, and foreign investment

With the potential to transform Mumbai into a global media powerhouse, the project reflects both the scale of Prime Focus’s ambitions and Maharashtra’s commitment to fostering world-class creative infrastructure. The groundwork is expected to begin shortly.
