A Race Against Time

The incident occurred around 9:05 AM in Gujrewadi, Khopde Nagar, when Chavan—who was on his weekly off—heard panicked shouts of “Ladki gir rahi hai!” (The girl is falling!). He rushed to his balcony and saw the little girl dangling precariously from a third-floor window, about 100 feet away. Without wasting a second, Chavan, still in his vest and towel, sprinted towards the building.

Upon reaching, he found the apartment locked from the outside, with the child alone inside. Fortunately, the girl’s mother arrived just then, returning after dropping off another child at school. Chavan quickly explained the situation, took the keys, and unlocked the door. He then rushed to the bedroom, unlatched the window, and pulled the terrified girl to safety.

A Firefighter’s Instincts Save the Day

Chavan, who serves as a Tandel (leading firefighter) at the PMC Kothrud Fire Station, credited his quick thinking and firefighting training for the successful rescue. “There was no time to think—just act. If I had hesitated even for a few seconds, the outcome could have been tragic,” he said.

What makes this act even more commendable is that Chavan was off-duty, enjoying a relaxed morning at home after his bath when the emergency unfolded. His presence of mind and bravery turned a potential tragedy into a miraculous rescue.
