Pune: Speed Limit Reduced to 30 kmph After Navale Bridge Accident; New Traffic Rules Announced
Navale Bridge Accident: Pune Brings 30 kmph Speed Limit, Orders Immediate and Long-Term Safety Measures
Pune has moved into action after the recent Navale Bridge accident that killed eight people and injured several others on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. The administration has announced a strict 30 kmph speed limit, stronger enforcement on heavy vehicles, urgent short-term safety steps, and a fast-tracked plan for permanent road infrastructure solutions.
These decisions were taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Transport Murlidhar Mohol at the VVIP Guest House in Pune. Senior officers from PMC, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, PMRDA, NHAI, PWD, PMPML, RTO, Police and other agencies were part of the review following Navale Bridge accident.
Tragic accident triggers urgent action
The accident took place when a container truck travelling from Satara to Mumbai lost control near Navale Bridge and crashed into more than 20 vehicles during peak evening traffic. The chain collision led to eight deaths and at least 15 injuries. This was one of several major accidents reported in this area over the past few years, making the stretch one of the most dangerous points on the highway.
Mohol said the accident once again showed how essential it is to speed up both short-term fixes and long-term projects so that such incidents do not repeat. He added that each agency has been given clear responsibility and timelines.

Speed limit reduced to 30 kmph, more speed guns deployed
One of the most immediate changes is the reduction of the speed limit from 60 kmph to 30 kmph. The minister said speeding has been a major cause of accidents at Navale Bridge and strict enforcement is necessary.
The number of speed guns on the stretch will be doubled from three to six. Police will increase patrolling, especially during peak hours, to ensure vehicles follow the new limit.
Permanent solutions: Ring road and elevated corridor
Mohol confirmed that the long-term solution for reducing accidents at Navale Bridge lies in two major infrastructure projects:
• the Jambhulwadi–Warje ring road
• the Jambhulwadi–Ravet elevated corridor
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the elevated corridor is already complete and will soon be placed before the state cabinet. The ring road DPR, being prepared by PMRDA, will be fast-tracked.
He said both projects will help reduce highway congestion and divert heavy vehicles away from the accident-prone Navale Bridge stretch.

Service road works and Vadgaon Bridge widening to be sped up
NHAI has been asked to quickly finish service road and underpass work between Jambhulwadi and Ravet. The minister also issued instructions to start the widening of the Vadgaon Bridge without delay.
Both PMC and PCMC have been directed to remove encroachments on service roads so that traffic flow improves immediately.
RTO begins strict checks at Khed-Shivapur
Heavy vehicles will face tough checks at the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza, where the RTO will inspect trucks for:
• overloading
• brake and mechanical issues
• safety compliance
If a heavy vehicle violates rules, the penalty will be imposed at the next toll plaza. Mohol said this will ensure continuous tracking and accountability for heavy vehicle operators.
More reflectors, official PMPML stops, and systematic crowd control
To make the stretch safer at night, authorities will install additional reflectors along the road. PMPML has been asked to set up official bus stops in the area to prevent buses from halting improperly on the highway.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said crowd-control and traffic-management measures have already been strengthened and more action will follow. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said encroachments are being cleared on priority and service road work is being pushed forward after the Navale Bridge accident.

PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase said work on both the ring road DPR and service road improvements will be accelerated.
District Road Safety Committee to meet regularly
The minister stressed that the District Road Safety Committee, chaired by the Collector, must meet regularly as per schedule so that pending road safety work is monitored and completed without delay. He added that accountability for short-term measures has been clearly assigned to each agency.
Officials present at the meeting
Those present included MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, Divisional Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase, SP Sandeepsingh Gill, NHAI official Sanjay Kadam, RTO officers and senior officials from PMC, PCMC, PWD and PMPML.
Next review meeting in December
A follow-up meeting will be held in December to check the progress of all short-term and long-term measures announced after the Navale Bridge accident.
