Mumbai, June 09, 2025: In a deeply distressing incident on Monday morning, four passengers lost their lives and several others were injured after falling from an overcrowded Mumbai local train between Diva and Mumbra stations. The tragic fall occurred around 9:30 AM during peak travel hours, when the train was heading toward Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Eyewitnesses and officials confirmed that the passengers who fell were standing on the footboard of the crowded train. One witness reported, “Just after crossing Mumbra station, a man from another train collided with something near our coach. People fell, but I can’t say exactly how many.”

Initial reports from the Thane District Administration indicated that around 13 people fell from the train. Of these, four were confirmed dead. Two critically injured individuals were taken to Jupiter Hospital, while the rest were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa and Thane Civil Hospital. Seven of the injured are said to be stable.

CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences via a public statement and on social media platform X, calling the incident “extremely unfortunate.” He said, “We share the grief of the families. The injured have been admitted to Shivaji Hospital and Thane Civil Hospital. I pray for their speedy recovery. The Railway Department has initiated an investigation into the exact cause.”

Shiv Sena MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, commenting on the situation, noted that the incident occurred when both up and down local trains were passing each other near Mumbra—adding to the risk during peak-hour congestion.

The Mumbai Railway Police confirmed the casualty count and noted that train services continued to operate, although local authorities and railway officials were present at the site to assist and investigate.

Mumbra, though located on the outskirts of Mumbai, is known for its extremely high passenger traffic and overcrowding. Monday’s tragedy has once again exposed the persistent risks commuters face on the city’s lifeline — the suburban rail network — and may finally prompt long-awaited safety upgrades.
