Mumbai, July 19, 2025: The beloved ‘Van Rani’ toy train, a cherished attraction at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali, is all set to make a grand comeback after a four-year hiatus. The train, which was shut down in 2021 due to severe damage caused by Cyclone Tauktae, is now being revived with modern upgrades, thanks to the efforts of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik.
A Nostalgic Journey Returns
Originally launched in 1974, the ‘Van Rani’ (Queen of the Jungle) has been a favorite among children, families, and tourists for over five decades. The eco-friendly train, with an 80-passenger capacity, once offered a delightful ride through the lush greenery of SGNP, covering a scenic 2.3 km route.
After Cyclone Tauktae damaged the tracks and infrastructure in 2021, the Forest Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, undertook a major redevelopment project to restore and modernize the iconic toy train.
Key Upgrades and Features
1. Completely Relaid Tracks & Bridges
The entire 2.3 km stretch has been reconstructed, along with the rebuilding of all 15 bridges along the route, ensuring a smooth and safe ride for passengers.
2. New Modern Coaches
A brand-new toy train unit has been added to the SGNP fleet. Trial runs began on June 30, 2025, followed by a successful full-capacity test on July 5, confirming the train’s operational readiness.
3. Upgraded Stations
- Krishnagiri Station: The station building, platform, and accessibility ramps have been completed.
- Teenmurthy Station: The platform is ready, and the station shed is expected to be finished by July 25, 2025.
