Mumbai to Bengaluru in 13 Hours: Govt Approves Revolutionary Vande Bharat Sleeper Express

Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper

MUMBAI – Union Railway Ministry has officially approved the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Mumbai and Bengaluru. The announcement, hailed by Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan, marks a pivotal shift for India’s busiest tech and commercial corridor.

Overnight Revolution: Slashing Travel Time by 40%

Currently, the journey between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and KSR Bengaluru takes anywhere between 20 to 24 hours via traditional express trains. The new Vande Bharat Sleeper is engineered to complete the 1,140-km stretch in approximately 13 to 16 hours.

“This is a transformative step for passengers,” stated Devendra Fadnavis, thanking PM Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the “Good News.” The service is expected to provide a premium, faster alternative to both existing rail options and expensive flight tickets.

Route Details: Connecting Key Hubs in Maharashtra and Karnataka

The high-speed sleeper will not just link the two terminal cities but will act as a lifeline for several industrial and educational hubs.

Key Stations on the Route:

  • Maharashtra: Mumbai (CSMT), Pune, Solapur.
  • Karnataka: Kalaburagi (Wadi), Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Davanagere, and Tumakuru.

The inclusion of Belagavi and Hubballi is seen as a strategic move to bolster the “Economic Triangle” between Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru.

What’s Inside? 160 kmph Speed and “Kavach” Safety

Unlike the existing Vande Bharat Chair Cars, the Sleeper version—manufactured by BEML in collaboration with ICF—is designed for long-distance comfort.

  • Capacity: 16 coaches with 823 berths across First AC, 2-tier, and 3-tier classes.
  • Safety: Equipped with the indigenous ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system.
  • Amenities: Ergonomic berths, sensor-based lighting, automated doors, and improved noise insulation for a jerk-free, quiet sleep.

The Second of its Kind in India

This Mumbai-Bengaluru service becomes only the second Vande Bharat Sleeper route in the country, following the Howrah-Kamakhya line launched earlier this year. With the Ministry aiming to roll out 12 such trains by the end of 2026, the CSMT-KSR Bengaluru route is positioned as the flagship service for Western and Southern India.

While the official schedule and fare structure are yet to be notified, sources suggest an evening departure from both cities to facilitate “business-ready” morning arrivals.
