Good news for electric vehicle drivers in Maharashtra! The crucial Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to become a lot more EV-friendly by the end of this year.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced plans to install eight new electric vehicle charging stations along the 94.5-kilometer expressway. This is a significant upgrade, as there are currently only five charging points serving the entire busy stretch.
A senior MSRDC official confirmed that a study is already in progress to pin down the best locations for these new stations, with the goal of having them operational by December.
This expansion addresses a major concern for EV owners. The expressway is a vital corridor, seeing over 140,000 vehicles every day. As more people in the state consider switching to electric, the lack of adequate charging infrastructure has been a real hurdle for longer journeys.
The state government seems to be listening. This charging station project follows another recent incentive: an exemption from toll taxes for EVs on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Atal Setu, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. These moves are clearly designed to make electric vehicles a more practical and appealing choice for commuters.
The push comes at a good time. While Maharashtra has a strong base of over 558,000 registered EVs, the rate of new registrations has slowed noticeably this year. The hope is that by eliminating “range anxiety” on key highways, more drivers will feel confident making the switch.
For current EV owners, this development is a welcome relief. Many have hesitated to take their cars on long trips, and this infrastructure boost could be exactly what’s needed to get them on the road.
