Mumbai-Pune Expressway To Become 10-Lane Superhighway By 2030 | What To Expect

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Expansion: A Future-Ready Upgrade
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is preparing to transform the Mumbai-Pune Expressway into a massive 10-lane superhighway by 2030. The project aims to reduce severe traffic congestion and prepare for growing vehicle numbers on this crucial intercity route.
Cost and Construction Timeline
According to MSRDC officials, the proposed upgrade will expand the existing eight-lane expressway into ten lanes. The additional two lanes will increase the total project cost by ₹1,420 crore, bringing it to ₹8,440 crore. Combined with other related works, the overall estimated cost now stands at approximately ₹14,260 crore.
If the project receives approval, MSRDC expects to start construction by 2026, with completion targeted between 2029 and 2030. The agency plans to submit the project proposal soon after Diwali under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
How the Hybrid Annuity Model Works
The Hybrid Annuity Model encourages private participation in infrastructure projects. Under this model, the government funds 40% of the total cost, while private developers invest the remaining 60%. This approach combines public oversight with private sector efficiency — making it ideal for large-scale projects like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway expansion.
Addressing Traffic and Future Growth
Inaugurated in 2002, the 94.6 km Mumbai-Pune Expressway connects Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to Kiwale near Pune. It currently serves around 65,000 vehicles on weekdays and over 100,000 on weekends, with traffic increasing by approximately 5-6% every year.
The upcoming 10-lane expansion will complement the ongoing 13 km missing link construction near Khandala Ghat — a critical section that often slows down traffic. Once completed, the superhighway will ensure smoother travel, better safety, and reduced travel time for commuters.
Minimal Land Acquisition and Toll Extension
MSRDC stated that land acquisition requirements for the project will be minimal since most of the adjacent land belongs to the corporation. Only small pockets near tunnels may need to be acquired. The current toll collection validity stretches until 2045, but it may be extended once the expansion project begins to maintain financial viability.
Political Support and Public Response
Local leaders, including MLA Mahesh Landge, have expressed strong support for the expressway’s expansion, citing the need to ease congestion and accommodate future growth. Once completed, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway 10-lane superhighway will be among India’s largest expressway upgrades, setting new standards in intercity travel and infrastructure development.
