Mumbai–Konkan Ro-Ro Ferry Starts Tomorrow: Travel in Just 3 Hours, Tickets Start from Rs 2,500

A new Ro-Ro ferry service is set to change the way people travel between Mumbai and the Konkan coast. Starting September 1, the M2M ferry will connect Mumbai’s Bhaucha Dhakka port with Jaigad in Ratnagiri and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg, cutting journey times dramatically. Trips that once took 12-14 hours by road during peak traffic will now take just 3-4 hours to Ratnagiri and 5-6 hours to Sindhudurg.

Maharashtra Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane described the launch as a “festival gift” for locals during Ganeshotsav. He confirmed the service will begin after weather clearances and trial runs, promising a safe, reliable, and quicker journey for both residents and tourists.

The M2M ferry has a total capacity of 656 passengers with four classes: Economy (Rs 2,500), Premium Economy (Rs 4,000), Business (Rs 7,500), and First Class (Rs 9,000). Travellers can also carry their vehicles, with fares set at Rs 6,000 for cars, Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers, Rs 600 for bicycles, and Rs 13,000 for mini buses. Larger buses will be charged based on capacity.

Daily departures are scheduled from Mumbai at 6:30 am, with a two-hour stop at the destination before returning. The ferry’s top speed of 25 knots makes it South Asia’s fastest Ro-Ro vessel. The service also provides last-mile connectivity, with buses arranged from jetties to nearby towns, making it convenient for locals heading home during festivals.

This is Maharashtra’s second Ro-Ro service, following the Mumbai–Mandwa route launched in 2020, which reduced a 3-hour road trip to just one hour. The Mumbai–Konkan ferry concept dates back to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ earlier tenure and received final clearance after completing 147 approvals from the Union Shipping Ministry and State Ports Department.
Rane, who inspected the vessel earlier this month, said the service represents more than just a route. Plans are underway for new jetties linking future routes to Shrivardhan, Mandwa, and eventually Goa. He highlighted that the ferry is expected to attract not only Konkan locals but also tourists keen to explore the coast.

The new service comes as a relief for travellers during Ganeshotsav and Holi, when highways and trains are overcrowded. With faster travel, fixed fares, and onboard vehicle access, the M2M ferry offers a long-awaited alternative to hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic.
For anyone heading to Ratnagiri or Sindhudurg, this ferry could be the fastest, safest, and most scenic way to travel along the Konkan coast.
