MSRTC Launches AI-Powered Smart Buses for Enhanced Passenger Safety and Comfort

Mumbai, May 17, 2025: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is revolutionizing public transport with the introduction of 3,000 smart buses equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge technology to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
AI and Advanced Features for Safer Travel
MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik announced that the new fleet—including the iconic Lal Pari (red ST buses)—will feature:
- AI-based cameras for real-time monitoring
- GPS tracking and driver breath analysers
- Anti-theft bus lock systems
- Automatic passenger counting
- LED TVs for updates and advertisements
- Wi-Fi hotspots for connectivity
The move follows recent safety concerns, including a Pune rape case involving a parked ST bus. To prevent such incidents, buses will now have 24×7 CCTV surveillance at entry/exit points, passenger seats, and the driver’s cabin.
Third Eye for Driver Monitoring
A “third eye” AI camera will track driver behavior, detecting fatigue, mobile phone usage, or aggressive driving (like sudden braking). Automated alerts will be sent to supervisors in case of violations.
Smart Ticketing and Data Analytics
The buses will also support digital payments via cards or mobile apps. Real-time data analytics will optimize routes, improve efficiency, and enhance service reliability.
A presentation on these smart features was recently held at Mantralaya, highlighting how AI-driven buses will ensure punctual and secure travel.
