MSRDC Begins Drone Survey of 294 Villages for New Mahabaleshwar Project Expansion

Mumbai, June 11, 2025 – The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has initiated a drone survey of 294 villages as part of the next phase of the New Mahabaleshwar Project, a major initiative to develop a modern hill station near the existing Mahabaleshwar tourist hub in Satara district. The survey, which began on June 1, aims to create a detailed development plan for these newly included villages.
Expansion of the New Mahabaleshwar Project
Originally, the project covered 235 villages, but due to strong demand from surrounding regions, the Maharashtra government expanded the scope in March 2025, adding 294 more villages across Satara, Patan, and Jaoli tehsils. The total area now spans 94,404.74 hectares (approx. 944.05 sq km), with 191 villages in Patan, 53 in Satara, and 50 in Jaoli tehsil.
MSRDC officials confirmed that the planning process for these new villages follows the same model as the initial 235 villages. The final draft for the first phase is ready and is under review by the planning committee, with submission to the state government expected by end of June 2025. Once approved, groundwork will commence, reported Hindustan Times.
Key Features of the Development Plan
The New Mahabaleshwar Project covers approximately 1,153 sq km, divided into:
- 4 planning divisions
- 13 tourist sectors
- 20 tourism growth centres (to boost tourism management)
- 14 eco-production centres (to drive local economy and employment)
- 44 village clusters (to improve access to amenities and community development)
The project aims to enhance tourism potential while ensuring sustainable and balanced growth, benefiting villagers, entrepreneurs, artisans, and youth.
Public Feedback and Next Steps
Earlier this year, MSRDC sought public feedback on the initial draft, receiving nearly 900 responses, with 90% supporting the project. After public hearings in May, the committee finalized the draft for the first phase.
Meanwhile, the drone survey for the 294 new villages will help shape the next draft. Jitendra Bhopale, MSRDC’s Director of Town Planning, confirmed that data collection is underway, marking a crucial step in the expansion.
With both phases progressing, the New Mahabaleshwar Project is set to transform the region’s tourism, infrastructure, and economy.
