More Rain in Pune Till April 2: IMD Issues Yellow Alert; Ghats Particularly Vulnerable
Pune, March 30, 2026: Residents of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad (PCMC) should keep their umbrellas and rain gear handy, as the current spell of unseasonal weather is set to persist. Following a series of intense hailstorms and thunderstorms that battered the region recently, weather experts and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have confirmed that the city will continue to witness volatile weather conditions until April 2.
According to Dr. Vineet Kumar, a research scientist specializing in cyclones, the atmospheric conditions remain conducive for rain across the Pune metropolitan area for the next few days. This forecast aligns with the IMD’s latest bulletin, which predicts widespread thunderstorms and rain across several parts of Maharashtra starting today.
Detailed Weather Forecast
The transition from March into early April is expected to bring significant atmospheric instability across the region. Based on the latest meteorological data, here is the projected schedule for the coming days:
- March 30 – 31: Expect high-intensity thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and powerful gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. Isolated areas are highly likely to experience hailstorms during this period.
- April 1 – 2: The intensity remains significant, with thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall. Gusty winds are expected to persist at speeds of 40–50 kmph in isolated pockets. The city remains on Yellow alert for rough weather on these two days.
- April 3: The weather is expected to transition toward light rain and thundershowers as the system begins to weaken.
Special Alert for Pune Ghats
While the plains may see a reduction in intensity by April 3, the Ghat areas of Pune are under a sustained yellow alert. From today through April 3, the Ghats will continue to experience consistent thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall, with gusty winds maintaining speeds of 40–50 kmph. Travelers and residents in these high-altitude areas are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Respite from Heat, but Caution Advised
While the sudden showers have provided much-needed relief from the rising summer temperatures, the severity of the winds and the potential for hail pose risks to standing crops and temporary structures.
Citizens are advised to stay indoors during lightning strikes and secure loose objects outside their homes. For those commuting between Pune and PCMC, visibility may drop suddenly during heavy spells, and gusty winds could lead to falling tree branches in some neighborhoods.
As the city navigates this week of erratic weather, the “cool down” serves as a temporary break before the typical April heat returns to Maharashtra.
