Monsoon Revival in Maharashtra: Heavy Rains to Return from June 13

Maharashtra Weather, June 10, 2025: After a prolonged lull, the monsoon is set to revive over Maharashtra starting June 13, bringing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across multiple regions, including Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of Marathwada. Senior meteorologists have warned of potential flooding, landslides, and gusty winds, urging residents to stay alert.
Monsoon Set to Intensify
According to KS Hosalikar, former Head of Climate Research & Services at IMD Pune, the monsoon current, which had stalled over Maharashtra, will regain momentum by Friday, June 13. He stated, “The monsoon train halted over Maharashtra for quite some time but is now going to pick up again with full thrust over Konkan (including Mumbai and Thane), Madhya Maharashtra, and adjacent districts of Marathwada.”
Days 4 and 5 (June 16-17) are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued an orange alert for several districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Key Areas at Risk
- Konkan Coast (Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg): Rivers may swell above danger levels, leading to possible floods.
- Ghat Regions (Satara, Pune, Kolhapur): Poor visibility, waterlogging, and landslides in sensitive areas.
- Marathwada & Karnataka-Kerala-TN Belt: Anupam Kashyapi, former Head of Weather Forecasting at IMD Pune, warned of intermittent moderate to intense rain in Pune and heavy showers in South Maharashtra (including Kolhapur, Satara Ghats), Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu from June 13 onwards.
Possible Impacts & Precautions
- Flooding in low-lying areas along Konkan rivers.
- Landslides in hilly and ghat sections.
- Disruptions due to gusty winds (40-50 kmph) and lightning strikes.
- Travel delays on highways, especially in Western Ghats.
Authorities advise residents to:
✔ Avoid venturing near rivers and landslide-prone zones.
✔ Stay updated with IMD’s district-wise forecasts (to be released closer to June 13).
✔ Prepare for power outages and road blockages.
Current Weather & Alerts
While Maharashtra enjoys calm weather until June 12, the IMD’s orange alert signals severe conditions ahead. Coastal and hilly regions must remain vigilant.
Stay tuned for further updates as the monsoon revival approaches!
