Monsoon 2025 Commences Early Withdrawal; Begins Retreating From Today, September 14 | IMD

The familiar rainy season has officially started to pack its bags. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the 2025 Southwest Monsoon has begun its withdrawal, starting from parts of West Rajasthan as of Sunday, September 14th.
This kick-off to the monsoon’s retreat is happening a few days ahead of the typical schedule. The normal date for the withdrawal to begin is September 17th, making this year’s start slightly early.
So, how do scientists know the monsoon is actually leaving and not just taking a break? The IMD confirmed the withdrawal after three key conditions were met. First, an anti-cyclonic circulation (which typically brings drier, settled weather) developed over the region. Second, there has been absolutely no rainfall in these parts for the last five days in a row. And finally, the moisture in the air has significantly reduced, creating a drier atmosphere.
The specific line of withdrawal passes through several cities, including Sri Ganganagar, Nagaur, Jodhpur, and Barmer.

This is just the beginning of the end. The IMD forecasts that conditions are looking favorable for the monsoon to continue withdrawing over the next two to three days. Residents in more parts of Rajasthan, as well as some areas of Punjab and Gujarat, can expect to see the rainy season wind down and drier, sunnier weather begin to take hold.
