Matheran Light Railway Completes 118 Years; Central Railway Organises Impressive Display of Working Models and VR Tours
The historic Matheran Light Railway (MLR) came alive this past weekend as Central Railway (CR) celebrated the Matheran Station Mahotsav, a vibrant tribute marking the iconic narrow-gauge line’s 118th anniversary. The event successfully transported over 200 visitors through time, showcasing the rich heritage of the hill station’s famed rail link.
The Mahotsav was a true feast for railway enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Central Railway curated an impressive display featuring rare heritage artefacts, beautifully preserved rolling stock, and intricate working models of the Matheran train.

A Journey Through Time
One of the major highlights of the celebration was the opportunity for visitors to get up close with the past. Attendees were able to view components and documents detailing the MLR’s storied 118-year journey. The static display of rolling stock allowed visitors to appreciate the evolution of the coaches and engines that have ferried tourists up the picturesque Matheran hills for over a century.
Adding a modern twist to the historical tribute, the event also featured immersive VR tours. This innovative technology provided an exciting, new perspective on the railway’s operations and the stunning landscapes it traverses, bridging the gap between the line’s deep history and the digital age.

The Matheran Light Railway, a key attraction for tourists visiting the Pune region, remains a testament to early 20th-century engineering. The successful Mahotsav reaffirmed Central Railway’s commitment to preserving this vital piece of India’s railway heritage while engaging the public in its compelling history.
