Sangli, Maharashtra, June 24, 2025: In a shocking incident highlighting the extreme pressures of competitive exams, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly beaten to death by her father for scoring low marks in a NEET mock test. The accused, Dhondiram Bhagwan Bhosale (50), a school principal, has been arrested and remanded to police custody.
Tragic Incident Stemming from Academic Pressure
The victim, Sadhana Bhosale, a Class 12 student, was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a highly competitive medical entrance exam in India. According to police reports, Sadhana had recently scored poorly in a preparatory test, which enraged her father.
In a fit of anger, Dhondiram allegedly attacked Sadhana with a wooden stick on Friday night. The brutal assault left her critically injured. The next morning, her mother, Preeti Bhosale (41), rushed her to a hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the district hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
A Bright Student with Dreams of Becoming a Doctor
Preeti Bhosale, in her police complaint, revealed that Sadhana had scored 95% in her Class 10 exams and aspired to become a doctor. The family had high expectations for her to clear NEET, and the alleged assault followed her disappointing performance in a practice test.
After performing her daughter’s last rites, Preeti approached the police and filed a formal complaint against her husband. Based on her statement, a case was registered against Dhondiram under:
- Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)Â (equivalent to culpable homicide)
- Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015Â (punishment for cruelty to a child)
Police Investigation and Arrest
Sub-divisional police officer Vipul Patil and police inspector Vinay Vahir visited the crime scene for further investigation. The Atpadi Police arrested Dhondiram on Sunday, and he was subsequently produced in court, which remanded him to police custody till June 24.
Rising Concerns Over Academic Pressure and Parental Expectations
This tragic incident has reignited discussions on the extreme academic pressure faced by students preparing for competitive exams like NEET and JEE. Mental health experts emphasize the need for parental support over punitive measures, urging families to balance expectations with emotional well-being.
