Maharashtra’s E-Bike Taxi Policy Nears Completion, Set to Launch in 15 Days
Pune, April 18, 2025 – The Maharashtra transport department is putting the final touches on a comprehensive policy for e-bike taxi services, with officials confirming that the framework will be ready within the next 15 days. The move aims to regulate aggregator companies, establish fare structures, and ensure safety for both riders and passengers while promoting clean mobility.
Once finalized, the policy will allow electric two-wheelers to operate as bike taxis within a 15-kilometre radius in cities like Mumbai and Pune. This initiative aligns with the state’s push for sustainable transport solutions and better last-mile connectivity.
Key Features of the Policy
The draft includes guidelines for fare calculation, operational permits, and mandatory safety measures. Companies will need to apply for permissions through Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) before launching services. Additionally, the transport department is analyzing energy consumption and operational costs to determine a city-specific fare structure, expected to be finalized in two months.
Mixed Reactions from Stakeholders
While the policy has been welcomed as a progressive step, some industry experts express concerns over its reliance on electric vehicles. “Pune’s earlier bike taxi services succeeded because petrol and CNG bikes were permitted. With EVs still limited in number, adoption might be slow initially,” said Baba Shinde of the Maharashtra Transport Vehicle Owners and Drivers Association.
However, citizens remain optimistic. An urban planner from Pune, believes the service could ease traffic congestion. “If implemented well, e-bike taxis could be a game-changer for daily commutes,” she said.
With the final draft nearing completion, Maharashtra is set to become one of the first states to introduce a structured e-bike taxi framework, paving the way for greener urban transport.
