Even as the progress of the southwest monsoon over Maharashtra remains sluggish, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an uptick in rainfall activity across the state from June 5 to June 8, with Pune set to witness a noticeable surge in showers. Weather systems forming over central India are expected to play a key role in triggering rainfall across several regions.

🌧️ Pune Braces for Moderate Rainfall Surge

According to IMD Pune, light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue across Pune district, including rural and ghat regions. The rainfall is expected to increase in intensity from June 5, with moderate to heavy showers in isolated areas accompanied by generally cloudy skies.

IMD’s Shivajinagar observatory, the official rain gauge for the city, recorded 16.7 mm of rain on June 4, marking it as a moderate spell—even though no specific alert had been issued for the day. Early morning showers were reported in Kondhwa, Katraj, Warje, and Lohegaon, leading to minor traffic disruptions. In rural and ghat areas, rainfall totals were higher:

  • Nimgiri (Mulshi): 25 mm
  • Malin: 22 mm
  • Kurvande & Hadapsar: 17.5 mm
  • Pashan & Shivajinagar: 16.7 mm
  • Bhor: 13 mm, Lohegaon: 10 mm, Chinchwad: 8 mm

According to SD Sanap, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Pune, “Moderate to heavy showers may occur in isolated areas, accompanied by generally cloudy skies.”

The increased rainfall is being influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat and a north-south trough near 87°E longitude and 22°N latitude. These systems are expected to bring light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) to Pune, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha, with a yellow alert in effect for many districts.
