PuneNow, June 12, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated weather warnings across Maharashtra, issuing critical Orange and Yellow Alerts for multiple regions. The alert period covers June 12-19, with two intense rainfall phases expected.

🔴 Orange Alert: Extreme Weather Conditions in Western Maharashtra

The IMD has upgraded warnings to Orange Alert status for these high-risk districts:

  • Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg (Konkan region)
  • Kolhapur & Satara (including ghat sections)

Expected Impacts:

  • Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall 
  • Severe thunderstorms with frequent lightning
  • Dangerous gusty winds (50-60 kmph)
  • High risk of landslides in ghat areas

“Residents in these districts must avoid all non-essential travel, especially through ghat sections which may experience landslides,” warned IMD officials.

🟡 Yellow Alert: Widespread Disruptions Across Central & Eastern Regions

Yellow Alert covers nearly 80% of Maharashtra’s population centers, including:

Northern Maharashtra:

  • Mumbai Metropolitan Region: Palghar, Thane, Mumbai
  • North Maharashtra: Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar (Aurangabad)

Central Maharashtra:

  • Pune, Solapur
  • Marathwada: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Dharashiv (Osmanabad)

Vidarbha Region:

  • Nagpur Division: Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Gondia
  • Amravati Division: Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Washim, Yavatmal

Expected Conditions:

  • Moderate rainfall 
  • Thunderstorms with frequent lightning
  • Gusty winds (40-50 kmph)
  • Possible waterlogging in urban areas

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting division, IMD Pune has stated that the forthcoming weather will manifest itself in two waves as follows:

  1. First Wave (June 12-14):
    • Peak intensity in Konkan & Western Ghats
    • Mumbai-Pune expressway may face disruptions
  2. Second Wave (June 16-19):
    • Extended impact across Vidarbha
    • Possible river level rises in Godavari basin
