Maharashtra Reports 153 New Covid Cases; State Among Top Contributors to India’s 1,009 Active Infections

Kerala, Delhi Also See Surge as New Variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 Detected; Health Officials Urge Caution
Maharashtra has reported 153 fresh Covid-19 cases in the past week, taking its total active infections to 209, according to government data released on Monday (May 26). The state remains one of the worst affected, contributing significantly to India’s 1,000+ active cases.
Kerala leads with 335 new cases (430 active), followed by Maharashtra and Delhi (99 new cases, 104 active). Other states like Gujarat (83 cases), Karnataka (47), Uttar Pradesh (15), and West Bengal (12) have also recorded infections.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured citizens that hospitals are prepared and there is “no need to panic.” Meanwhile, Maharashtra has reported four Covid-related deaths, Kerala two, and Karnataka one.
New Variants Detected
Amid rising cases, India has detected two new Covid variants—NB.1.8.1 and LF.7—according to Insacog (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium). The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies these as “Variants Under Monitoring” but not yet as Variants of Concern or Interest.
Health Ministry’s Advisory
The Union Health Secretary reviewed the situation on Saturday, noting that most cases are mild and under home care, with Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka being the most affected.
