Maharashtra Greenlights Four-Year UG Programs from 2026-27 Academic Session
MUMBAI – In a landmark move for the state’s education sector, the Maharashtra government has officially approved the implementation of the fourth year of undergraduate programs starting from the 2026-27 academic year. This transition aligns the state’s higher education framework with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Chandrakant Patil, announced on Wednesday that the government has issued comprehensive guidelines for the introduction of Honours and Honours with Research degrees. The decision aims to shift the academic landscape from traditional rote learning to a more research-oriented and skill-based model.
Uniform Implementation Across the State
The Government Resolution (GR) issued on April 6, 2026, mandates that all public universities, as well as affiliated and autonomous colleges across Maharashtra, adopt the new four-year structure. To ensure a seamless transition, the Maharashtra State Academic and Research Council (MahaSARC) has developed standardized guidelines following extensive consultations with Vice-Chancellors and education experts.
“This is a revolutionary step,” Minister Patil stated. “By adding the fourth year, we are opening doors for our students to engage in deep-dive research and specialized skill development, making them globally competitive.”
Key Features of the New Structure
The revised curriculum framework offers flexibility and multiple entry-exit options, a core tenet of NEP 2020. Under the new guidelines:
- Four-Year Honours: Focuses on advanced knowledge and professional skills in a chosen major.
- Four-Year Honours with Research: Specifically designed for students aiming for higher academic pursuits and Ph.D. programs.
The state government’s steering committee will monitor the implementation process periodically to ensure that the standards of education remain uniform across all districts. This move is expected to significantly enhance the employability of graduates and foster a culture of innovation within Maharashtra’s higher education institutions.
