Leopard Sighting Triggers Fear in Kharghar Hills

Navi Mumbai, December 01, 2025: A fresh leopard sighting reported by Adivasi residents in Chafewadi on Kharghar hill has led to increased patrolling and inspections by the Forest Department. Villagers said they spotted the leopard near Chafewadi pada on Tuesday evening, raising concern across nearby tribal hamlets including Phanaswadi.

Residents have demanded firm action to trace the animal and ensure their safety. Many villagers said they are avoiding early morning and late evening movement until officials confirm the area is safe.

Earlier Sighting Reported Four Months Ago

Locals recalled a similar incident about four months ago when a leopard was seen moving from Chafewadi towards Phanaswadi. At the time, forest officials installed CCTV cameras and checked for pugmarks in wet patches around the hill but found no evidence of the animal.

The latest sighting has renewed fear among villagers, especially since the big cat was reportedly spotted close to homes.

Forest Officials Begin New Round of Checks

Range Forest Officer Gajanan Panpatte said his team has stepped up patrolling and launched a fresh inspection in the area. Cameras have been reinstalled at key points to monitor movement.

Panpatte said the department has not yet found any physical signs of the leopard but assured that appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing inspection.

Viral Video Not From Kharghar

The forest department also clarified that a viral video circulating on social media showing a leopard is not from Kharghar hill. Officials urged citizens not to spread unverified content to avoid unnecessary panic.
