A new dumbphone called the Keyphone has been launched as part of a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. It comes with a custom operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (15), which is expected to offer a wide range of features. For example, the device can be used for calls, messaging, taking photos and notes. However, it’s not a smartphone in the traditional sense. It’s designed for comfortable typing, even for longer texts, thanks to a physical keyboard.

The Keyphone supports dual SIM and comes with 64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via microSD in order to store more music, for instance. The partially modular design means that several components, including the keyboard, camera and battery, can be replaced comparatively easily. The battery, for example, isn’t glued and should be particularly simple to swap.

The 4G-capable phone also supports WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0, and WiFi calling is supported as well. A more robust design is advertised, and additional buttons are available. As part of the crowdfunding campaign, backers can secure a Keyphone for $259. It’s important to remember the significant financial risks typically associated with crowdfunding, which also apply to this BlackBerry-esque feature phone.
