Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that India’s road infrastructure will match the quality of the United States within the next two years. In an exclusive interview with ANI, the Road Transport and Highways Minister highlighted the rapid progress in highway development, reduced logistics costs, and upcoming mega-projects that will transform connectivity across the country.

A Decade of Transformation

Gadkari emphasized that Indian roads have already undergone a massive facelift under the current government, with highway construction accelerating from 12.1 km per day in 2014-15 to 33.8 km per day in 2023-24. “The question is not about the facelift—it has already changed,” he said. “In another two years, Indian roads will be comparable to America’s.”

Backing his claim, Gadkari revealed that even American visitors have acknowledged India’s superior infrastructure in some areas. Improved roads have slashed logistics costs from 16% to 9%, boosting export competitiveness. “This will benefit agriculture, manufacturing, and all sectors,” he added.

Mega Projects in the Pipeline

The government is working on 25 greenfield expressways, a 3,000 km port connectivity highway, and ₹1 lakh crore worth of roads linking religious tourism circuits like the Char Dhams and Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Additionally, 36 tunnels between Jammu and Srinagar are under development, with 23 already completed.

Under the Parvatmala Yojana, 15 ropeways and 35 multi-modal logistics parks are also in progress. “Public infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth,” Gadkari stated, reinforcing India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in road connectivity.
