In a significant move to bolster passenger safety, the Indian Railways has announced the installation of CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives across its network. This decision comes after successful trials conducted by the Northern Railway, confirming the effectiveness of surveillance systems in deterring crime and ensuring security.

360-Degree Surveillance for Unmatched Safety

Under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, the Ministry of Railways is rolling out a comprehensive surveillance system. Each coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras—two at each entrance—to monitor passenger movement while maintaining privacy. Locomotives will have six cameras each, including front, rear, and side-facing cameras for complete coverage. Additionally, both driver cabs will feature one dome camera and two microphones for enhanced monitoring.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the progress in a high-level meeting on July 12, 2025, attended by senior Railway Board officials. The ministers emphasized the need for high-quality footage even at speeds exceeding 100 kmph and in low-light conditions.

AI-Powered Surveillance for Future-Proof Security

The new STQC-certified CCTV cameras will feature cutting-edge technology to ensure crisp and reliable footage. Minister Vaishnaw also urged officials to explore AI integration in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission, enabling smarter threat detection and real-time response.

Balancing Safety and Privacy

To address privacy concerns, cameras will be strategically placed in common movement areas near coach doors, avoiding sensitive zones. This setup aims to deter miscreants and organized gangs while safeguarding passenger confidentiality.

This modernization drive underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to a safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel experience, aligning with global safety standards.
