On August 20, 2025, India’s Strategic Forces Command successfully test fired the Intermediate Range Agni 5 ballistic missile with a range of over 5000 km from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha.
The launch validated all operational and technical parameters.
Agni-5 is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with Mach 24 speed and it forms the core of India’s nuclear deterrence.
AGNI-5 is a nuclear capable platform and has a range of more than 5000 kilometres. Europe, Asia , Middle East and major part of Africa now come in its range. It is reported to have the capacity of carrying a nuclear warhead of upto 1500 kg with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) capability.
MIRV technology lets a single missile target and hit multiple targets at once and is difficult to intercept because some of the MIRVs are set as decoys, overwhelming enemie’s air defence systems.
