IMD Issues Heat Wave Alert for Maharashtra: Many Districts Brace for Rising Temperatures
Mumbai, April 13, 2026: Large parts of Maharashtra are set to experience a sharp rise in temperatures over the next five days, according to the latest forecast charts released by the India Meteorological Department. While coastal districts will grapple with hot and humid conditions, several inland districts across Vidarbha, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra are likely to face heat wave conditions beginning mid-week.
The forecast for April 13 to April 17 indicates that Vidarbha will be the worst affected region, with multiple districts expected to experience sustained high temperatures and heat wave warnings.
In Vidarbha, Akola and Amaravati are expected to witness heat wave conditions starting April 15 and continuing through April 17. Yavatmal is also likely to see an early onset of heat wave conditions beginning April 15. By April 16, the heat wave is expected to expand to Nagpur, Wardha, Buldhana and Washim. Other districts including Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Gondia currently have no official warnings, though dry and very hot conditions are likely to persist.
Along the Konkan coast, the concern is less about heat waves and more about humidity-driven discomfort. Mumbai, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are expected to remain dry until April 14, after which hot and humid conditions are forecast for April 15 and 16. Thane and Raigad may experience this humid discomfort slightly earlier, beginning April 14 and continuing through April 16.
In the Marathwada region, districts such as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli are expected to remain dry until April 15. However, isolated pockets could experience heat wave conditions on April 16. Meanwhile, Beed, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv are forecast to remain dry throughout the five-day period without specific heat wave warnings at present.
Western Maharashtra is also expected to feel the impact. Sangli and Sholapur may experience heat wave conditions in isolated pockets on April 15 and 16. In contrast, northern districts such as Nasik, Jalgaon, Dhule and Nandurbar are likely to remain dry without any official warnings during the forecast period.
According to the five-day outlook, April 13 and 14 will largely remain dry across the state, although discomfort may begin building in Thane and Raigad by April 14. The first wave of heat alerts is expected on April 15, when Akola, Amaravati, Yavatmal, Sangli and Sholapur may enter heat wave conditions, while coastal districts face hot and humid weather.
April 16 is expected to mark the peak intensity of the heat spell, with the heat wave expanding to additional districts including Nagpur, Wardha, Buldhana, Washim, Jalna and Parbhani. By April 17, heat wave conditions are likely to persist mainly across Vidarbha districts, while coastal areas are expected to revert to dry weather.
The IMD has also issued a public health advisory urging residents to take precautions as temperatures rise. People are advised to stay well hydrated and drink water regularly even if they do not feel thirsty. Outdoor activities should be avoided between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, particularly in Vidarbha and Marathwada where heat stress is expected to intensify. Residents in coastal cities such as Mumbai and Thane are also cautioned about the risk of heat exhaustion due to high humidity levels on April 15 and 16.
With temperatures expected to climb steadily through the week, authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious and take necessary steps to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
