PUNE: A wanted criminal with multiple cases against him was shot dead by Satara police in Pune district on Saturday evening after attacking officers during an arrest attempt. The incident occurred around 6:30 pm near Bhujbal Nagar, Malthan Phata in Shikrapur.
The accused, identified as Lakhan Popat Bhosale, had a long criminal record, including charges of murder, robbery, and dacoity. Police said he recently got out on bail and committed at least seven robberies in Satara in the past month. He was also wanted in cases registered in Sangli and Pune Rural districts.
According to Satara Police, Bhosale, along with an associate Amol Daulappa Kere, was spotted during a search operation connected to a chain-snatching case. When police attempted to apprehend him, Bhosale allegedly attacked the team with a knife, stabbing Police Havaldar Sujit Bhosale on the chest and arm, and injuring another officer, Tushar Bhosale, on the arm.
In response, Tushar Bhosale fired a round in self-defence, seriously injuring the accused. Both the injured policemen and Bhosale were rushed to Surya Hospital, Shikrapur, and later to Rural Hospital, where Bhosale was declared dead. His body has been sent to Sassoon General Hospital, Pune, for post-mortem.
Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi confirmed the events, stating that the police acted in self-defence. “The accused attacked our team with a knife, injuring two policemen. Police fired a round, injuring the accused, who later succumbed to his injuries,” Doshi said.
Police sources said Bhosale was under surveillance for several months due to his extensive criminal history. He had at least 22 cases, including those under MCOCA, and was involved in theft, house break-ins, and attempted murders across Pune and Satara districts. The Satara Police had launched a manhunt following intelligence inputs about his movements around Pune.
