Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Expansion Handed Over to Mahametro; 23 Stations to Be Ready by March 2026
Pune: The Maharashtra government has officially handed over the responsibility of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro expansion to the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Mahametro). This marks a major shift in Pune’s urban transport development, with the 23.3-kilometre corridor expected to be fully operational by March 2026.
Mahametro Takes Charge of Metro Expansion
Earlier managed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro line will now be completed under Mahametro’s supervision. PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase confirmed that the state government has transferred full responsibility for the project to Mahametro. “The ongoing work from Maan–Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar will now continue under Mahametro’s authority,” he said.
Key Details of the Project
The 23.3-km long Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor will have 23 stations and has been developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with Tata-Siemens as the private partner. Each metro train is designed to carry around 1,000 passengers, promising faster and smoother connectivity between Pune’s IT hub in Hinjawadi and the central business district in Shivajinagar.
In July this year, the first trial run was successfully carried out between Maan Depot and PMR-4 station, showing strong progress in construction. Over 90 percent of the project work is reportedly complete.
List of Metro Stations
The Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro line will include the following 23 stations:
Megapolis Circle, Embassy Quadron Business Park, Dohler, Infosys Phase 2, Wipro Phase 2, Pal India, Shivaji Chowk, Hinjawadi, Wakad Chowk, Balewadi Stadium, NICMAR, Ram Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Village, Baner, Agricultural Research, Sakal Nagar, Savitribai Phule Pune University, RBI, College of Agriculture, Shivajinagar, and Civil Court.
Transition from PMRDA to Mahametro
While PMRDA has been instrumental in initiating and monitoring the metro’s construction, the state government’s latest decision signifies a strategic move to consolidate metro development under Mahametro. Future metro expansion projects across Maharashtra will now fall under Mahametro’s jurisdiction, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will continue handling projects in the Mumbai region.
Once the ongoing Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro line is completed, PMRDA’s role in the corridor will officially conclude. The transition aims to bring more efficiency and expertise to Pune’s growing public transport network, strengthening the city’s long-term mobility goals.
