India is set to witness a spell of intense weather activity over the next week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across multiple regions of the country from May 22 to May 28, 2025. Several states are also likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall and thundersqualls during this period.

South Peninsular India

Kerala and Karnataka are bracing for fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph from May 22 to 28. There is also a likelihood of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with Coastal Karnataka expected to see extremely heavy rain on May 24.

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana will experience scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph over the next five days. Notably, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal (May 22–26) and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam (May 22, 26 & 27), while very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Telangana on May 22.

Thundersqualls with wind speeds up to 70 kmph are forecast for Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema on May 22 and 26.

West India

A significant weather system is expected to impact Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathawada, which will receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorm and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) from May 22 to 28. Gujarat State will see scattered to fairly widespread rain from May 22 to 25.

Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast for Konkan & Goa (May 22–24) and Madhya Maharashtra (May 24). Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra (May 22–28) and Marathawada (May 22). Gujarat will see isolated heavy rainfall throughout the week.

Thundersquall winds of 50–60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, are expected in Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathawada on May 22 and 23, and in Gujarat from May 25 to 28.

Northeast India

The entire northeastern region is likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) over the next seven days. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in:

  • Assam & Meghalaya (May 22–27)
  • Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura (May 22–25)
  • Arunachal Pradesh (May 23–26)

East & Central India

States like West Bengal, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Bihar will experience scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and winds reaching 40–50 kmph from May 22 to 26.

Thundersqualls (50–60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) are likely over:

  • East Madhya Pradesh (May 22–25)
  • West Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh (May 22–23)
  • Gangetic West Bengal (May 22)

Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast in:

  • Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh (May 22–23)
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim (May 22)
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands (May 23–26)
  • Vidarbha (May 24)
  • Odisha (May 27–28)

Northwest India

Regions including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan will witness scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) from May 22 to 28.

Thundersquall winds of 50–60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph are expected in:

  • Uttarakhand (May 22–24)
  • West Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh (May 23–24)
  • East Rajasthan (May 25–26)

Uttarakhand may experience isolated heavy rainfall (May 23–24) and Himachal Pradesh may see isolated hailstorms on May 23 and 24.

Dust storms with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely over West Rajasthan (May 23–25).
