Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorm and Gusty Winds in These States in the Next 48 Hours

India is set to experience a wide range of intense weather phenomena over the next four days, as multiple regions brace for thunderstorms, gusty winds, hailstorms, heavy rainfall, and dust storms. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts covering most parts of the country, urging residents and authorities to remain vigilant.
Heavy Rainfall Likely in Several Regions
Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected at isolated places in different regions throughout the forecast period:
- 03 May (Day 1): Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and South Interior Karnataka are likely to receive heavy rainfall.
- 04 May (Day 2): Odisha may continue to experience heavy rainfall.
- 05 May (Day 3): Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya are forecasted to receive heavy rain.
- 06 May (Day 4): Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala.
Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Across India
Widespread thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected across multiple states with varying intensity:
- 03–06 May: States like Odisha, South Interior Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, West Bengal (Gangetic and Sub-Himalayan), Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh (East and West), Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh (East and West) will experience thunderstorms with gusty winds ranging from 30-60 kmph.
- Cities and regions such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and parts of Rajasthan are under alert for thunderstorms and winds reaching up to 60 kmph.
- Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh will also witness similar conditions over the next few days.
The intensity of the wind is expected to increase in some areas:
- 50-60 kmph gusts: Expected over regions such as Odisha, Bihar, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and various parts of Rajasthan from 03 to 05 May.
- 30-50 kmph gusts: Forecasted in northeastern states like Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Hailstorm Alerts Issued for Specific States
Thunderstorms accompanied by hailstorms are forecasted at isolated places, especially in central, northern, and southern India:
- 03 May: Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
- 04 May: Uttarakhand and East Madhya Pradesh.
- 05 May: Uttarakhand and North Interior Karnataka.
- 06 May: North Interior Karnataka once again falls under the hailstorm alert.
Dust Storms with Thunderstorms in Rajasthan
Both East and West Rajasthan are expected to experience dust storms combined with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–50 kmph) from 03 May to 06 May. These events could lead to poor visibility and local disruptions.
Squally Winds Over Coastal and Marine Areas
Marine and coastal areas are also under watch as squally winds are expected in the Arabian Sea and surrounding coastal belts:
- 03–04 May: Northeast Arabian Sea, off North Gujarat Coast, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Comorin Area will experience winds of 45–50 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph.
- 05 May: Central parts of North Arabian Sea continue to face similar squally wind conditions.
- 06 May: Many parts of the Northwest Arabian Sea are likely to be impacted by squally winds reaching up to 55 kmph.
Hot and Humid Conditions in Southern India
In addition to storm activity, hot and humid conditions are very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 03 May.
